An associate professor is a faculty member at a university or college who has achieved a level of professional and teaching experience that is typically above that of an assistant professor, but below that of a full professor. Associate professors are usually promoted from the ranks of assistant professors after demonstrating excellence in their field of research or teaching, and frequently hold advanced degrees such as PhD or other doctoral degree. They typically have substantial responsibilities, including teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, conducting research, mentoring students, and serving on various academic committees. They may also be involved in administrative tasks related to academic programs or the university as a whole.
